Ammonia: more than a neurotoxin?

چکیده

Ammonia is an inorganic nitrogen compound that is metabolized and produced in all tissues via a number of important biochemical reactions. However, a major source of ammonia generation occurs in the gut following protein digestion and amino acid deamination. The subsequent ammonia-rich portal blood is effectively removed by the urea cycle in a healthy liver, maintaining circulating concentrations of ammonia within 35–65 μM. When liver function is compromized, hyperammonaemia arises delivering toxic concentrations of ammonia to the brain, causing deleterious effects.

Comparative Study of Immunological and Structural Properties of Two Recombinant Vaccine Candidates against Botulinum Neurotoxin Type E

Background: Recently, botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT)-derived recombinant proteins have been suggested as potential botulism vaccines. Here, with concentrating on BoNT type E (BoNT/E), we studied two of these binding domain-based recombinant proteins: a multivalent chimer protein, which is composed of BoNT serotypes A, B and E binding subdomains, and a monovalent recombinant protein, which contains...

Effect of Botulinum Neurotoxin A Injection into the Submucoperichondrium of the Nasal Septum in Reducing Idiopathic Non-Allergic Rhinitis and Persistent Allergic Rhinitis

Introduction: Submucoperichondrial injection of botulinum neurotoxin A (BTA) in the nasal septum is a promising therapeutic option in the treatment of persistent allergic rhinitis (AR) and non-allergic rhinitis, and is safer and more effective than intraturbinate injection in reducing clinical symptoms.   Materials and Methods: Forty patients diagnosed with persistent AR or non-allergic rhiniti...

Action of the neurotoxin -N-oxalyl-L- , -diaminopropionic acid on glutamate metabolism of brain mitochondria.

Mammalian neurolathyrism is a progressive and degenerative disease of central nervous system originating from excessive consumption of Lafhyrus seeds, particularly those of L. sativus. Rao et al. [I] have isolated P-N-oxalyl-L-a&diaminopropionic acid (ODAP) from the seeds of L. satiuus and shown this substance to be the neurotoxin [ 1, 21 Characterization of the biochemical effect and cellular ...

Increasing Level of Ammonia in the Surface Raw Water Source at Dhaka, Bangladesh

In 2004,ammonia concentration in raw water of Sitalakhya River at the eastern periphery of Dhaka was found higher than the expected rate of 4 mg/Lforecasted in feasibility studies, with a value of about 8 mg/L, which could not be removed by conventional treatment chain employed at Dhaka, hence, recentlyan ammonia removal plant has been constructed. This important background has ledto the current...

Ammonia as a Potential Neurotoxic Factor in Alzheimer's Disease

Ammonia is known to be a potent neurotoxin that causes severe negative effects on the central nervous system. Excessive ammonia levels have been detected in the brain of patients with neurological disorders such as Alzheimer disease (AD). Therefore, ammonia could be a factor contributing to the progression of AD. In this review, we provide an introduction to the toxicity of ammonia and putative...
